AMERICAN RED CROSS

 LIFEGUARD COURSE

If you are in need of a Lifeguard Certification for the 2012 season please contact us to register.  Orientation is scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 2012 and will begin at 10:00 AM.  The Orientation will be held at THE DIVE SHOP Aquatic Center.  The instructor will coordinate and schedule the training class time at Orientation. 

Class fee:  $495.00 (includes material) - If you are interested you must call to register (or stop by) as payment is required at time of registration (no later than 2/15/12) and before placing your name on the class roster. 

Class ratio:  10-1 and will be on a first come first serve basis.

TRAINING:  American Red Cross Life guarding is ideal for those wishing to work at traditional pools.  You will learn professionalism, patron and facility surveillance, distressed swimmer recognition, equipment-based rescue and more.

Through videos, group discussion and hands on practice you will learn:

  • Surveillance skills to help you recognize and prevent injuries
  • Rescue skills-in the water and on land, including equipment based rescues
  • First aid training and professional rescuer CPR to help you prepare for any emergency
  • Professional Lifeguard responsibilities which would entail interacting with the public and addressing uncooperative patrons
  • How to recognize and care for the possible head, neck or back injury
  • The value of conducting yourself in a professional manner
  • Knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies

PRE-REQUISITES:  Participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age AND able to swim 500 yards continuously using breast stroke and freestyle. Start in the water, swim 20 yards (front crawl or breaststroke), surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return with it to the surface, swim back 20 yards to starting point with the object, exit the water without using a ladder or steps within one (1) minute, forty (40) seconds.

CERTIFICATIONS:  Lifeguards/First Aid:  3 years and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer: 1 year - this program includes certification for Water Front as well.
